WingChun technique-Pak Da
This article I would like to talk something about a basic Wingchun Technique - Pak Da.Pak Da means Pak sau + Da,this is one of the basic WingChun attacking technique, but as I mentioned before,is the Pak Da you've been traning reasonable? The answer is “it's up to you”,in this article I just want to talk some key points of Pak Da or Pak sau including “Kan wei”、“distance” etc.
Now let's watch some videos I found and you will think if some of these are what you've been training.
This is one of the Pak sau drill video,I noticed that there is a pulling motion, remember what I wrote in my previous article?if you want to pull, you must attack first then pull, don't grab hand directly,no chance(Wing Chun technique1,Bong sau lap da).
This is another Pak Da drill video,I believe lots of WingChun practitioners play Pak Da drill in this way,but for me it is unreasonable because we will never start fighting after we stand in the distance of Chi Sau and put our hands into position of Chi sau with our opponent. So I will just see it then ignore it.
This Pak Da drill looks reasonable, but for me,there is a little problem, that is I will never suggest you attack your opponent from the front, try by yourself,if you and your partner fight as real or combat drill, you attack from front, your partner just bring out arms and push you away and keep muscle a little bit tight, you can not go in and you will get a big chance to get hit.just try.
Pak sau doesn't mean Pak your opponent's sau(hand or arm),it is Kan Wei(Kan wei again, this is very important),just like tan sau I mentioned in my previous article(WingChunTechnique-2,Tan Da)
Area in red should be covered by your Pak sau(from head to crotch) to make yourself safe(Kan wei) and if there is a punch from your opponent you will clean your way to attack back,if there is no punch or fake punch you just do the same thing.
Now let's see how to fight with Pak Da.
There is two situations:
1- you know nothing about your opponent and you want to make yourself safer,I suggest you play Pak Da with backward when you feel your opponent will move first to attack you. I call this is "Backward Pak Da". But please pay attention,if you do backward Pak Da,you must do Pak+Kan wei and Tan Da. Tan is another Kan wei.
Like this, backward and my left hand do Pak and other hand Kan wei just in case the punch from my opponent is too fast or my opponent gives me a fake punch at the first and second motion is real,I have to protect my head, it is hard to explain clearly, try by yourself.
Kan wei
Like this,Pak and Da at the same time,But please pay attention, don't attack your opponent from the front, try to go-in from side,it will make your opponent has no room to kick you back and his other hand can hardly hit you.Try by yourself.
Here are examples
What will happend if your partner gives you round punch? Only he gives you a round punch on the same side with your Pak sau, you two will both get hit.Try it.
Tips:
1-Try to go-in from side and get close to your opponent as much as possible.
see,I can easily hit his balls with my knee after I hit his face and he can hardly kick back
And if your opponent is too fast and he moves first, you do backwrad Pak Da(triangle horse).
never forget to Kan wei
Let your partner give you round punch and you do backwrad Pak Da, the round punch should not hit you and you can not pak his arm either that means your backward is correct, you make a safe distance for yourself, then fight back. When you can do this drill very well, try to do this with fast speed and moving around, you will find that it is very difficult to go-in with right angle and distance, that is the reason why we should keep training isn't it?
Ok that's all for this article, have a nice training
